Discovering Tokyo, Japan
Tokyo, the first stop on our honeymoon - what a city! From the minute we landed we were amazed by the energy of the place. Tokyo is a city of bright lights, fast trains, vending machines on every corner, skyscrapers as far as the eye can see, and millions of people everywhere!
At first it was quite overwhelming, the sheer energy of the city. However, it didn't take us long to understand why so many people are attracted to Tokyo; it is a city of contrasts. We quickly learned to appreciate the Japanese way of life. Scattered around the city are huge parks, which serve as respite from the city for the Japanese people. We were lucky enough to have arrived at the beginning of the 'Sakura' season - the blooming of the Cherry Blossom - what a sight! Sakura is a special time for the people of Japan, who celebrate 'Hanami' parties with picnics and drinks sitting under the cherry blossoms.
Some other highlights from our time in Tokyo include strolling the streets of Shinjuku at night with it's many quirky restaurants such as the Robot Restaurant, and the cool little bars in the hidden alleyways of the Golden Gai area. We checked out some Japanese street style along Harajuku's busiest street Takeshita street. Walked across the famous Shibuya crossing, ate at street markets in Asakusa, and the best seafood we've ever had at Tsukiji fish markets. We also escaped the city for a day to check out the many temples in Hakone - hot tip: If you plan on going to Hakone try and go when the weather is good. Unfortunately for us it was cloudy so we didn't get to see Mt Fuji.
